"Bad request timestamp" error (Duo issue)

Modified on Mon, Apr 1 at 9:51 AM

Occasionally, you might encounter a "Bad request timestamp" error message when attempting to log into Windows.

This usually means that your computer's clock is out of sync with the actual time.  This causes Duo to prevent you from logging in.

The quick fix is to completely disconnect from the internet.  If you are plugged in with an ethernet cable, unplug it from your computer.  If you are on WiFi, click the WiFi icon in the bottom-right corner of the login screen to Disconnect from your WiFi connection.

After that, you should be able to log in successfully and reconnect to the internet.  Connect to the internet and then the VPN as normal.

If you find that your system clock is still not in sync with the real time, right-click the date/time in the bottom-right corner of your screen and click Adjust date/time.  If the "Sync Now" button is greyed out, wait until the next sync and verify that your computer clock matches the actual time.
