Running multiple versions of Encompass on one computer

Occasionally, a user may need simultaneous access to the live Encompass SmartClient and one or more SmartClient test environments on the same machine. The following steps from Encompass will help create two separate SmartClient instances on the user's computer.
  1. 1. Open current Encompass file location

Go to their current Encompass icon, right-click, go to Properties and click the “Open Folder Location” button. This should take you to the folder containing the SmartClient files.
  2. 2. Run RemoveUAC

Run the RemoveUAC.exe program and click OK – no need to change any of the options. This may wipe out some of the contents of the folder you’re looking at, but that’s expected.
  3. 3. Create new instance of SmartClient

Take that current folder and copy it anywhere on the hard drive. For example, you could simply copy it to a folder named “EncompassBE2” or whatever you want.
  4. 4. Create new shortcut for test environment

Create a second shortcut on the desktop to the AppLauncher.exe program in this new folder (now you should have two shortcuts – one to each of the two folders).
  5. 5. Log in to each environment

Run Encompass from each icon. For one icon, provide the customer’s self-hosted Client ID/Server ID (e.g. “3011023345”) and server address. For the other, use their hosted SmartClient ID (e.g. “BE11023345”) and server address.
The way SmartClient works, you can make as many copies of that core SmartClient folder and you want and have each folder go to different servers. Even if the servers are on different versions of Encompass, that’s OK – SmartClient will download the correct files to the correct folder.
