Branch Network/AT&T Diagram

Modified on Tue, Jan 13 at 11:12 PM

As of fall 2025, all offices are on the SD-WAN with AT&T.  This includes a cellular backup in the event that the main internet connection goes down.

The VMWare Velocloud is the white rectangular box, usually in the network rack (when space allows) or on a nearby shelf, which basically serves as the new router at all sites.

Port 5 on the Velocloud box is the hard wire connection (cable goes into the Ciena).  Port 3 is the wireless connection (cable goes into the top blue port of the cylindrical AT&T device).

When the hard wire connection goes down the Velocloud box should automatically re-route to the wireless device, and the branch/office will not notice an outage.  This can be checked/confirmed in the SD-WAN portal.

General Troubleshooting

  • If the branch/office reports a complete internet outage, confirm power to both the Velocloud and wireless devices.
  • Also, IT Engineering can start a ticket with AT&T and determine if there is an outage.
  • If no area outage reported and power is confirmed to both the Velocloud and wireless devices, IT Engineering may suggest the following:
    • Pull the cables out of port 3 and/or 5 from the Velocloud, wait 30 seconds, and plug back in.  This has fixed connectivity at the Crocker branch in the past.
    • Reboot the Velocloud first, wait 5-10 minutes, then check internet connectivity.  If still nothing, reboot the wireless device as well, wait 5-10 minutes, then check again.  If still nothing, it may be an ISP outage.
      • You can also reboot the wireless device first - it may come up faster and at least get the branch back online via backup.  There is also no harm in rebooting both devices at once to save the waiting time.
