Trism Temporary/Spare Card Printers

Modified on Fri, Jan 16 at 4:52 PM

NOTE: As of September 2024, there are now five "hub" branches at FFL that will use the newer HDP 600ii printers.  As the older printers stop working, they will be retired at the other branches and these five hubs will be the only branches with Trism printers:

  • Lakewood
  • North Ridgeville (northwest)
  • Garfield Heights (southeast)
  • Strongsville (southwest)
  • Concord (northeast)

Branches where Trism has been decommissioned and is no longer used (as of Sept. 2025):

  • Dave's Midtown
  • Olmsted Township (retired Dec. 2024)
  • Brunswick (retired Feb. 2025)
  • Gordon Square (retired March 2025)
  • Fairview Park (retired September 2025)
  • North Olmsted (retired September 2025)
  • Avon (retired October 2025)
  • Chagrin Falls (retired December 2025)

When a Trism printer is decommissioned, the branch should complete and submit the Decommission Form (see last page of the attached PDF).

As long as all media has been removed by the branch (ribbon, film, cards, etc.), an old, non-functioning Trism printer can simply be e-scrapped.  HID no longer supports these decommissioned terminals.

As long as some old printers remain in use at some branches, we can at least keep the hoppers in case one breaks down in the field.  Note: The hoppers for the 600 model units at the hub branches are different and NOT interchangeable with the old printers.

In 2022, FFL ended its Advanced Replacement Program with HID Global.  Previously, when a Trism card printer went down and needed repair or replacement, HID would ship the branch a new printer, then the branch would ship the old one back.

Currently, when a card printer goes down, IT is responsible for shipping the branch a temporary printer while HID repairs or replaces the original.  It is still the branch's responsibility to ship the original printer to HID for repair or replacement.

  • It is important that the spare printer is delivered to the branch in a box.  The branch will use that box to ship their broken unit to HID Global.
  • The shipping label from Michelle Booker should specify pickup at the branch so that branch staff do not have to lift/cart the printer to a FedEx location.
  • When the repaired unit comes back, the box should be used to bring the spare unit back to HQ for the next deployment, that way we always have a box to use for shipping to HID.

When the branch receives the temporary printer, have them plug it into the network and turn it on.  In DHCP, update the IP reservation so that the temporary printer picks up the same IP address that the original one had.  After updating DHCP, have the branch unplug the network cable and plug it back in to pick up the correct IP.

In the Trism Client on the Trism server (WLKWTrism01), log in with the TrismSRV credentials (in KeePass), then go to the Configure menu.  Select the branch that is using a temporary printer and Edit the printer properties.

You will just need to change the printer model to HDP600ii and change the port number to 443.  See details here: G:\Shared\AppFiles\Trism\Settings for temporary printers

After changing those two settings, open Services and restart the HID Card Printer service.  The branch should be ready to test printing a card to the spare printer at this point.

You may share this video with the branch if they need any assistance with physically setting up this model printer: HDP600ii - How to Set Up Your Card Printer - YouTube

When the branch receives the original printer (or a new one) back from HID Global, revert these changes to get it switched.

While a branch is using a temporary printer, mark the associated ticket in Freshdesk with the "TrismTempPrinter" tag so we can keep track of which branch is using a temporary printer.  There are five spare printers* in inventory that General Services is helping to courier to/from the branches.

Since these five spare printers are newer Trism printer models (HDP600ii), they have newer ribbons/cartridges than the older models and need to have a new ribbon go with it each time we send out a temporary printer to a branch.

The branch should NOT return the ribbon with their temporary printer when they are done with it.  The ribbon contains NPPI (account/card numbers) and should be kept at the branch for destruction.  IT/GS must send out a new ribbon with each spare printer, or the branch can order their own.  These can be purchased from Fiserv Custom Source (contact Christine Black or Nick Bodle for details).  They are expensive so we are only planning to maintain an inventory of one ribbon at a time.
