Camera not working

Modified on Thu, Jun 15, 2023 at 10:30 PM

Occasionally, you may encounter an issue where your laptop's built-in camera is not functioning properly.

1. Check your Camera Privacy Settings in Windows by going to the Start menu --> type in "camera" --> select Camera privacy settings.  Make sure the main setting is switched "On," as well as those further down for specific apps to use your camera.

2. Ensure that your camera lens is not covered.  Your laptop may have a built-in cover that can slide over the camera lens when not in use.  When the cover is engaged, you should see a reddish color where the camera lens is placed.  Slide the cover switch over to uncover the camera.

3. If you are attempting to use your camera in Microsoft Teams, ensure that the camera is enabled in the corner of your screen, as shown below (the camera icon should not have a line across it - that would indicate that it is turned off in Teams):

4. If all else fails and your computer does not even detect a Camera in Device Manager, contact IT for assistance.  Your camera could be disabled in the BIOS on your computer.

Notes for IT:

Have the user shut down, then start computer while pressing F12 repeatedly.  Log into the BIOS.  Go to System Config --> Misc Devices --> make sure the "Enable Camera" box is checked.  If not, check it, then Apply changes.
