Open File Sessions

Modified on Thu, Feb 12 at 2:21 PM

Occasionally, you may need to determine which user(s) currently have files open on a share drive in order to rename a folder or perform some other action.  To find out the specific user(s) that are in a file or folder, follow the steps below.

1. Log into the file server (e.g. for G:/ drive, log into Earth).

2. Open mmc --> File -> Add Snap-in --> Share and Storage Management (on newer servers, it is called "Shared Folders") --> Manage Open Files (or simply "Open Files")

Alt 1. Open Active Directory Users & Computers --> Action --> Find... --> Computers --> (enter name of file server) --> Find Now --> right-click the server and choose Manage

Alt 2. When Computer Management opens, go to System Tools --> Shared Folders --> Open Files

3. Sort the Open File column to find the folder/file in question and see which user(s) currently have it open.

4. After making an attempt to contact the user advising them to save their work so no data is lost, you can right-click on the row and click "Close Selected" or "Close Open File" to end that connection.

5. Proceed with renaming the folder or other action you were attempting earlier.
