Preventing Login under a Temporary Profile

Modified on Tue, Nov 26, 2019 at 5:24 PM

On occasion, Windows may log you in to another machine under a temporary profile. To prevent this from occurring and to make sure it is logging you in using your correct user profile, follow the steps below.
  1. 1. Registry Editor

In the Registry Editor (regedit) on the machine you are logged into, navigate to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
  2. 2. Rename profiles

There will be two profiles, one ending in .bak -- this should the correct profile. Rename the other one by adding _new or something else to the end of the name. Then, remove .bak from the correct profile.
  3. 3. Log off and back on

When you log off and back on, it should resolve the issue and not log you in under a temporary profile.
