Issue Setting New User Password (Windows 10)

Modified on Mon, May 4, 2020 at 6:15 PM

Occasionally, some new users (usually Win10 laptop users) will have trouble setting their own Windows password.  You may encounter something similar to the sequence below:

  • We set a temporary password for the new user in AD as we always do.
  • User goes to log in (AD set by default to have user change password at first login), enters the temp password, and states that “the user’s password must be changed before signing in."
  • User clicks OK, but instead of getting the three lines (one to enter the old/current temp password and two to enter new password), it takes the user back to the one-line prompt like a regular login screen.
  • User enters the temporary password again, then it states that the password has expired.  Stuck in a loop here.

To work around this issue, follow the steps below:

- Set a temporary password in AD and un-check the "User must change password at next login" box

- Have user log in with the temporary password (if it still causes issues at this point, have the user go to "Other User" and manually type in their user name and password)

- Check the "User must change password at next login" box in AD

- Have user do a Ctrl-Alt-Del from a logged in session and attempt to change their password
